ORGANIZATION | Washington Map Society
PUBLICATION | The Portolan has three issues every year. Each contains 60-72 pages of feature articles, book reviews, WMS speaker summaries, a recent cartobibliography, and other cartographic news.
DESCRIPTION | The Washington Map Society is one of the premier map societies in the world. It began in 1979 as a small, informal group interested in cartography, cartographic history, and collecting maps. It has expanded its interests to include modern cartographic concerns. There are eight or nine speakers a year, and a field trip or two. Membership is now over 360, but it has retained the comfortable feel of that original group. Membership is open to anyone interested in maps, and members come from all walks of life. Whether novice or expert, there is a place for everyone in WMS.
Because WMS meets in the Library of Congress Geography and Map Division Reading Room, some mistakenly assume there is a formal connection. WMS values greatly its informal links to the Library, but is an independent organization. |
