OCLC to Add SoftLine Databases
SoftLine, Inc. has agreed to OCLC s loading three SoftLine databases on the OCLC
FirstSearch service. The three will be available via subscription-only access. They are:
Ethnic NewsWatch, Women R and Alt*Health, which focuses on complementary and
alternative approaches to health. Ethnic NewsWatch also will be available on the
EPIC service. OCLC has not yet scheduled the loading of these databases, although
Ethnic NewsWatch, which has the highest priority, is expected to be loaded in the first
quarter of 1998.
OCLC Enhances FirstSearch Web
The following enhancements have been made to FirstSearch Web:
- Users can now look at related subjects by clicking on and searching the most
frequently occurring subject headings from records retrieved by a search.
- A new browsing index improves FirstSearch s WordList functionality.
SilverPlatter s PsycLit Price Increased
On January 1 SilverPlatter increased the cost of its PsycLit database. The new
PsycLit has expanded product coverage and hard-disc access. The new coverage is
1887 to the present. The new BCR prices are:
Stand alone $4,758 (compared to $4,880)
Single user $6,162 (compared to $6,320
2-4 users $7,547 (compared to $7,740)
5-8 users $9,739 (compared to $9,989)
9-2 users $14,322 (compared to $14,689)
SilverPlatter Retiring IAC Databases
SilverPlatter is no longer carrying IAC databases. No new orders or renewals will be
processed for IAC products.
Books in Print with Book Reviews Upgraded
Books In Print with Book Reviews on CD-ROM now includes Bowker's Complete
Video Directory and the entire Words on Cassette database. Books in Print with Book
Reviews also will include the last 10 years of the Books Out-of-Print database, which
contains not only books out of print, but also inactive audios and videos. The
database is now a two-CD set and is available at the same price as 1997. Additional
enhancements are planned for later in 1998. This is available only in Windows
format.
